Krill, a small crustacean that feeds on phytoplankton, lives in the clear, cold waters of Antarctica. Its position at the bottom of the food chain minimises the risk of accumulation of hazardous pollutants. Krill is the main food source for many marine creatures, particularly whales and penguins. According to current knowledge, its biomass is greater than that of any other animal species on our planet. The annual catch has remained constant for years at around 0.03% of the total biomass. Only 1% of the krill caught is used for health products such as dietary supplements, functional foods and biological medicines.

Marine life is a rich source of valuable omega-3 fatty acids. In Antarctic krill oil, these remain bound within a biological matrix that is unique in its effectiveness. The oil, extracted using a patented special process (Pure NKO®) contains not only the important omega-3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) but also the red pigment astaxanthin, which belongs to the carotenoid family and possesses powerful antioxidant properties.

Thanks to the gentle cold extraction process, the omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin in NKO® krill oil remain bound to phospholipids, just as they occur naturally in krill. This aids their absorption by the body. Krill oil is also rich in phosphatidylcholine, a phospholipid that provides choline, an essential building block of the brain’s neurotransmitters. Overall, Neptune krill oil offers a favourable ratio of omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids.

What you should know:
Not all krill oil is the same. Pure NKO® (the original krill oil from Neptune Technologies & Bioressources Inc.), gently extracted using a patented special cold-extraction process, was the first to receive official authorisation from the European Union as a food ingredient and for use in the manufacture of food supplements.
