What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan and first discovered in 1934, is a naturally occurring molecule in our body, particularly in the dermis (skin layer).

This molecule acts like an effective sponge as it can bind up to a thousand times its own weight in water. Hyaluronic acid therefore plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin's moisture, firmness and elasticity.

However, as we age, the body's own production decreases (around 6% every ten years). It is estimated that by the age of 50, half of the original reserves are already lost... This leads to visible signs of skin ageing, such as the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, crow's feet and expression lines.

Different types of hyaluronic acid

There are two types of hyaluronan in the human body: high molecular weight hyaluronic acid and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid.

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid forms a protective barrier that moisturises the outer layer of the skin.

Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrates deeper into the epidermis and contributes to internal hydration. It helps to revitalise the skin and stimulate the natural production of hyaluronic acid at the same time!
