Classification of Medicinal Plants
The effects of medicinal plants are determined by their chemical groups of active constituents, by which they are categorised.
Major groups include: bitter compounds (such as gentian), essential oils (such as peppermint), mucilages (such as marshmallow), alkaloids (such as poppy), tannins (such as lady's mantle), glycosides (such as foxglove), flavonoids (such as chamomile) and saponins (such as primrose). These secondary plant compounds have various functions in the plant and can produce different medicinal effects in humans.
Commonly occurring groups of active compounds in medicinal plants:
- Bitter compounds: These substances stimulate digestion and contribute to the appetite-enhancing effect of many herbs.
- Essential oils: They provide scent and flavour and often have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic or expectorant properties. Examples include peppermint and thyme.
- Mucilages: These polysaccharides form a protective layer on mucous membranes, which is why they are used for coughs or gastrointestinal problems. An example is marshmallow.
- Tannins: Their action is astringent and anti-inflammatory. They are used for inflammations of the skin or mucous membranes.
- Flavonoids: These are a group of polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids are found in chamomile and St John’s wort.
- Saponins: They have expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects and are frequently used for coughs.
- Alkaloids: This group of substances can be highly potent, and some alkaloids are also toxic. An example is the poppy.
- Glycosides: These compounds are often found in medicinal plants, such as the digitalis glycosides in the red foxglove, which can affect the cardiovascular system.
Herbs, resins and other medicinal plants as dietary supplements
Of course, our range only includes medicinal plants that are authorised for use in dietary supplements and only in dosages that are permitted.
Our products are not medicinal products; they are intended only to promote health and well-being within the usual scope for dietary supplements.
What must also be said: our products are made from raw materials of the highest quality, often pharmaceutical grade, and need not be ashamed when compared with over-the-counter products available in pharmacies.
If you have some knowledge of raw materials, you can easily see that many of our products are of higher quality than some of those found in pharmacies or drugstores.
Substances such as titanium dioxide, unnecessary colourings, preservatives, or gelatin for capsules where it is not needed are off-limits for us.
We are, of course, not allowed to name specific comparisons with products that many know from advertising and television here, otherwise we would immediately have those companies' lawyers on our case.
The fact is, however, that we are often surprised at the qualities offered at high prices, some even bearing the label 'medicinal product', with considerably poorer and cheaper formulations and raw material qualities than we would tolerate in our shop for dietary supplements.
