Chromium – Functions, Bioavailability and Supply
The function of chromium in the human organism lies above all in its presence in the so‑called glucose tolerance factor (GTF). Chromium is a trace element that plays an important role in the body, as it is involved in the proper digestion of macronutrients by facilitating certain enzymatic reactions. Although excessive intake should be avoided, its presence is essential for certain processes in our body. As our body is unable to produce it naturally, it is important to ensure an optimal chromium intake in order to benefit from its health-promoting properties. For example, it contributes to the normal metabolism of macronutrients and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels... Read more

What functions does chromium have?
Chromium has been shown to contribute to the normal metabolism of macronutrients. These include carbohydrates, fats and proteins, which the body needs for energy production and for numerous vital processes. In addition, chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. These approved health claims (Health Claims) make chromium a popular component of dietary supplements.
A balanced chromium status is particularly important as part of a varied and balanced diet. However, dietary supplements containing chromium are not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, but can be a useful addition.
Bioavailability of chromium
Bioavailability describes how well a nutrient can be absorbed and utilised by the body. For chromium, it depends largely on the compound used. Organic chromium compounds such as chromium picolinate or chromium yeast often show higher bioavailability in studies than inorganic forms such as chromium chloride. Nevertheless, various factors can influence absorption, including the composition of the diet and individual metabolic differences.
Many high-quality dietary supplements therefore rely on well-available chromium compounds and careful dosing. The recommended daily intake should not be exceeded on a long-term basis. Anyone who regularly uses dietary supplements or has health restrictions should, if in doubt, discuss their use with a healthcare professional.
Natural sources of chromium
Chromium is present in numerous foods, but usually only in small amounts. Good natural sources include whole grains, legumes, broccoli, nuts, mushrooms, as well as meat and certain cheeses. The chromium content of individual foods can, however, vary significantly depending on cultivation, processing and origin.
A balanced diet typically provides part of the daily chromium requirement. In certain life situations or with a very unbalanced diet, targeted supplementation may be sensible. Here, chromium capsules or other dosage forms offer a practical way to supplement daily intake.
