The Importance of Bitter Substances

Already when bitter substances touch the tongue, they stimulate the production of saliva, stomach acid and bile. This happens even before you swallow and sends a signal to the entire digestive tract. The production of digestive enzymes is promoted, which helps food be broken down more quickly, especially fatty foods. Complaints such as a feeling of fullness, bloating or heartburn can thus be alleviated. In addition, the liver is supported in detoxification, which is beneficial for fat metabolism.

Swedish herbs: A time-honoured herbal blend

Swedish herbs are based on a very old recipe, made particularly known by Maria Treben. The blend contains many bitter plants, such as wormwood (known for the bitter compound Absinthin), gentian root, angelica root, myrrh and tormentil root.

Application

  • When Swedish bitters are drunk as an alcoholic extract, they increase appetite and promote digestion. They are regarded as a typical bitter product for the stomach.
  • As a rub or compress, Swedish bitters can be used externally to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in muscle or joint problems, thanks to their essential oils and bitter substances.

The bitter substances in Swedish bitters promote the digestion of fats and stimulate the metabolism, which is why they are often considered natural fat burners. They also help reduce cravings for sweet foods, supporting weight control.

Traditionally Swedish bitters are taken drop by drop, often diluted in water or tea, before or after hearty meals. People with stomach complaints can benefit from the regular intake of bitter substances. However, because of its high alcohol content and potent herbs, Swedish bitters should not be used by pregnant women, children or people with acute stomach ulcers.

The robust mixture of bitter herbs in Swedish bitters is a proven, traditional remedy that deserves rediscovery in the modern age to improve digestion and overall well-being.
