Melatonin for a good night's sleep
Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It is a chemical messenger that is released in the absence of light. This fact is also the reason why Melatonin helps shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and is therefore also known as the "sleep hormone". In its natural state, melatonin levels peak between 2 and 4 am. Although melatonin occurs in small amounts in plants such as St John's wort, it is also found in trace amounts in some foods such as rice or bananas.... Read more

Further benefits of Melatonin
The following statement is supported by evidence and officially approved: It helps to reduce the effects of jet lag.
Jet lag is a well-known problem for travellers. It can initially manifest as a desire to sleep at any time of day or night, and then have the opposite effect by disrupting the sense of timing and causing recurrent sleep problems. In such situations melatonin plays an important role by regulating molecular release.
There is also some evidence that melatonin may be useful when on call. A dose before a rest period effectively helped with falling asleep when, for example, a call to a patient's bedside was required, and alertness was quickly restored.
What to consider when buying
There are two main considerations when choosing a melatonin preparation:
-
First, prefer a natural, plant-based melatonin without synthetic derivatives. Plant-derived melatonin, often obtained from St John's wort, is frequently preferred to synthetic or animal-derived melatonin in terms of quality.
-
Second, we recommend opting for a comprehensive formula that contains a variety of active ingredients for the evening routine, e.g. calming herbs.
As always: don't overdo it!
We recommend not using melatonin habitually in large amounts and over months or years. There is considerable evidence that melatonin is helpful and natural. However, there are also indications that it can lead to health problems if taken daily over many years as a habit. So, as with all natural remedies: the dose makes the poison — at the stated dosage and only when needed, melatonin is helpful and harmless!
