Dietary fibres – indispensable for digestion
Dietary fibres are largely indigestible food components, mostly carbohydrates, that occur mainly in plant-based foods. They are found especially in cereals, fruit, vegetables and legumes. Dietary fibres are essential for healthy digestion and the prevention of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Although the German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends at least 30 grams daily, many people do not reach this amount through food alone. In this respect, dietary fibres are not only important for areas already widely known to the public — above all digestion. There are also much less well-known but very important functions. For example, some fibres can bind and excrete toxins, such as pectins. Likewise, dietary fibres may be able to bind and excrete bile acids - which leads the liver to form new bile from cholesterol and thereby lowers the body's cholesterol level... Read more

Common forms of dietary supplementation
If intake via wholegrain products, pulses and vegetables is insufficient, supplements can help:
- Psyllium husk (Psyllium): Particularly effective for constipation and for regulating bowel movements.
- Inulin: A soluble fibre (often from chicory) that feeds beneficial gut bacteria as a prebiotic.
- Acacia fibre: Considered particularly well tolerated and supports a healthy microbiome.
- Guar gum or pectin: Often available in powder form to stir into foods or drinks.
Important usage notes
- Increase fluid intake: Fibres bind a great deal of water. Without sufficient fluid intake (at least 1.5–2 litres daily) supplements can have the opposite effect and lead to severe constipation.
- Gradual increase: To avoid bloating and abdominal pain, the dose should be increased gradually over several weeks to allow the gut flora to adapt.
- Source quality: Experts recommend obtaining fibre primarily from whole foods, as these also provide important vitamins and secondary plant compounds.
Benefits at a glance
- Satiety: They expand in the stomach and thus support weight management.
- Blood sugar: They slow sugar absorption and help prevent cravings.
- Gut health: They serve as food for beneficial bacteria and promote bowel movements.
