Mannose

Mannose is excreted in the urine but has the ability to bind and carry away excess substances. All the more useful together with bladder-friendly cranberry! The simple sugar D-mannose is primarily known for supporting urinary tract health by preventing bacteria (particularly E. coli) from attaching to the bladder wall; instead they bind to the mannose and are flushed out with the urine, which can thus prevent or alleviate a urinary tract infection. In addition, mannose serves the body as a building block for glycoproteins and is important for cell-surface recognition and immune regulation. It is also used in skincare products to retain moisture and promote cell renewal.... Read more

Functions in the body

  • Protection of the urinary tract: This is the best-known function; mannose binds to bacteria and thus enables them to be flushed out before they can cause an infection.
  • Component of glycoproteins: Mannose plays an important role in the structure of glycoproteins that lie on cell surfaces and serve as recognition markers.
  • Immunomodulation: There are indications that mannose may promote immune regulation and could possibly help with autoimmune conditions such as asthma.
  • Skin care: In cosmetics, mannose provides moisture, reduces wrinkles and supports cell renewal.

Key features

  • Little metabolism: D-mannose is hardly metabolised by the body for energy; instead it is transported unchanged to the kidneys and bladder.
  • Well tolerated: Generally considered very well tolerated, but can in rare cases cause diarrhoea.
  • No resistance development: Unlike antibiotics, bacteria cannot develop resistance to mannose.
  • Use (often as a dietary supplement): For prevention and as an adjunctive measure in bladder infections (cystitis).

Take plenty of fluids to support the flushing out of bacteria. Treatment of infections should always be discussed with a doctor.
