Devil's claw

The African devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a plant that thrives in the dry savannahs of South Africa. It got its name from its fruits, which are studded with barbs. In its native land this herb has been used for some time for digestive problems. It has also been used internationally for many years for joint problems. Harpagophytum can relieve feelings of fullness and flatulence, promotes the production of gastric juice and bile, and has a soothing effect on the musculoskeletal system. Active constituents of devil's claw

The tuberous roots of the devil's claw are rich in iridoid glycosides, with harpagoside being the main component. These intensely bitter substances stimulate saliva and gastric juice secretion and can help with digestive problems such as a feeling of fullness, bloating, pressure in the stomach, heartburn and abdominal pain. Devil's claw became particularly well known for its positive effects on the musculoskeletal system. It is likely that here too the iridoid glycosides, together with various phenylethanol derivatives, are responsible. They relax muscles, tendons and joints.
