Ashwagandha – the sleep berry

Ashwagandha is one of the most significant medicinal plants of Ayurveda. Ashwagandha, a symbol of fertility and vital life force, has had an established place for centuries in the practice of physical healing, particularly in the Ayurvedic folk medicine that originated in India. This plant belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and appears as a shrub with small orange-coloured berries. A striking characteristic is its smell, which is not exactly pleasant and resembles that of a horse. In fact, the plant's name derives from this scent: "Ashwagandha" is a combination of the Sanskrit words "ashva" (horse) and "gandha" (scent). In Arabic it is called "waraq a-chifaa", which roughly means "leaf of healing". This name reflects its impressive and versatile effects on the human body.... Read more

A plant of adaptation

Like other types of ginseng (Russian ginseng, Siberian ginseng, etc.), the Indian ginseng plant belongs to the so-called "adaptogenic" plants. Adaptogens are characterised by several important properties, including increased stress resistance, a versatile and non-specific effect (targeting all kinds of stress, whether of a biological, physical or chemical nature), and the absence of toxicity or interference with the body's normal functioning.

As a result, Ashwaganda is particularly useful when many stressors act on the nervous system and the necessary composure is lacking.

Ashwagandha: The constituents in detail

The composition of Ashwaganda is rich in amino acids, withanolides, tannins and much more. Let’s take a closer look at what makes up Ashwagandha.

Free amino acids

The amino acids found in Ashwagandha are crucial for the smooth functioning of our organs. These include:

  • Tyrosine, which stimulates the production of dopamine and contributes to stress regulation.
  • Glycine, which promotes muscle regeneration.
  • Proline, which is responsible for collagen synthesis.

Furthermore, the plant contains glutamic acid and alanine.

Withanolides

The leaves of the Ashwagandha plant contain withanolides, which are known for their antioxidant properties.

Withaferin A

Withaferin A, a component of the Ashwagandha roots, exhibits adaptogenic properties.

The berries of the plant, on the other hand, are rich in health-promoting elements such as flavonoids with antioxidant properties and tannins, which are known for their astringent properties.
