Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the body and is important for our natural sleep-wake cycle. When it gets dark, the body produces more melatonin and we start to feel tired. However, stress, bright light, long summer days, a disrupted sleep pattern or ageing can interfere with this process and make it harder to fall asleep. This is where Schlaf Balance plus comes in: each capsule contains 1 mg of melatonin, which has been proven to help you fall asleep more quickly.
What makes this blend special is that St. Helia deliberately avoids using individual, high-dose substances. Instead, it trusts that the body itself knows best what it needs. Melatonin is therefore combined with 5-HTP derived from the black bean (Griffonia simplicifolia), from which the body can produce its own melatonin as and when required. In addition, Sleep Balance Plus contains selected herbs from various parts of the world.

Who is melatonin particularly suitable for?

Not everyone produces the same amount of melatonin, and individual requirements can also vary.
If you find yourself going to sleep later, your day-night rhythm is out of sync, or you’re facing journeys involving a time difference – melatonin can help to alleviate the effects of jet lag. As we get older (from around the age of 50), the body produces noticeably less melatonin.

In addition to melatonin and its precursor 5-HTP, Sleep Balance Plus contains six special plants that have long been valued in various countries:
  • Valerian, hops, passion flower and lavender – well-known plants from European herbalism. Lavender is included in two forms: as a fine essential oil and as ground flowers.
  • Saffron is a very expensive spice, painstakingly harvested by hand from the stigmas of thousands of genuine saffron flowers (Crocus sativus).
  • Ashwagandha: Each capsule contains 100 mg of ashwagandha extract, including 5 mg of withanolides. The extract is derived from the root of Withania somnifera, also known as ‘sleepberry’ or ‘Indian ginseng’, which has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine.

This blend is ideal for anyone who wants to relax more easily in the evening and sleep better.

EFSA-approved health claims regarding melatonin

  • Melatonin helps to reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. The beneficial effect is achieved when 1 mg of melatonin is taken shortly before going to bed.
  • Melatonin helps to alleviate the subjective symptoms of jet lag. The beneficial effect is achieved when at least 0.5 mg is taken shortly before going to bed on the first day of travel and during the first few days after arrival at the destination.

Black bean extract (25% 5-HTP from Griffonia simplicifolia), ashwagandha extract, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule (vegetable-based), valerian root dry extract, passion flower dry extract (contains 2% flavonoids), hop cone extract, ground lavender flowers, anti-caking agent: medium-chain triglycerides from coconut (MCT oil), melatonin, saffron, lavender oil.

Recommended intake

1 capsule daily, 30 to 60 minutes before going to bed.

Important information

Not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for children and young people under the age of 18. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking this product, as it may impair your reaction times. If you are taking medication, only take this product after consulting your doctor.

Tips

  • Darkness promotes the body’s own production of melatonin, whilst daylight and blue light (e.g. from screens) inhibit it. Reducing bright light and avoiding blue light (e.g. by using blue light filters, night mode or dimming) in the one to two hours before going to bed can further help you fall asleep.
  • When travelling across time zones, it is advisable to start taking melatonin a day before departure. This can help your day-night rhythm adjust more quickly to your destination.
