Gut and Digestion - The Powerhouse Within Us
The human gut is not merely an organ for digestion; it is a complex system and the centre of our health. It is several metres long, consisting of the small and large intestine, and works hard every day to break down food and make nutrients available. In doing so it works closely with the microbiome – many beneficial microorganisms that produce important substances and support the body. A well-functioning digestive system is the foundation for energy and vitality... Read more

Substances for the gut bacteria
For the gut to work optimally it needs certain ingredients. Dietary fibre is very important, as it serves as food for the beneficial gut bacteria. This is plentiful in wholegrain products, vegetables, legumes and fruit. Probiotic foods, such as natural yoghurt, kefir or sauerkraut, provide live bacterial cultures that help maintain a healthy balance in the gut. Omega‑3 fatty acids, for example from fish or flaxseed oil, are also good for the intestinal mucosa.
How digestion works
Digestion begins in the mouth, but most of it takes place in the small intestine. Here food components are broken down by enzymes and bile into their smallest parts. Water and salts are then mainly absorbed in the large intestine, which makes the intestinal contents firmer. Through peristalsis, an involuntary, wave‑like movement of the intestinal muscles, the food is constantly moved along. The digestive system absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream.
Importance for health and well‑being
A healthy gut is very important for a strong immune system, because most immune cells are located there. Good digestion also has a positive effect on mood, as the gut produces hormones and signalling molecules. Foods high in fibre not only aid digestion but also keep you feeling full for longer. Regular exercise and sufficient water or unsweetened tea additionally support gut function.
Summary
Consciously supporting the gut through diet, especially with fibre and probiotic foods, is good for long‑term health. A balanced diet, regular exercise and relaxation in everyday life help ensure the digestive system functions well.
