Inulin

Inulin is a natural dietary fibre found in chicory, Jerusalem artichoke and onions. Like all fibre, inulin stimulates the gut and helps combat constipation. Above all, it functions as a prebiotic — that is, it serves as food for the "good" gut bacteria so they can thrive. Inulin is mainly used as a prebiotic fibre that nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, strengthens the microbiome and regulates digestion (in particular helping against constipation), thereby supporting the immune system. At the same time, through its role as a sugar substitute it can reduce calorie intake, increase satiety, keep blood sugar levels stable and promote the absorption of minerals, such as calcium.... Main functions in the body:

  • Supporting the gut flora (prebiotic): In the large intestine, inulin is fermented by beneficial bacteria (such as bifidobacteria), which promotes their growth and activity.
  • Optimisation of digestion: By binding water, increasing stool volume and stimulating bowel movements, it helps to prevent constipation.
  • Strengthening immune defence: A well-functioning immune system is closely linked to a healthy gut flora, which is supported by inulin.
  • Regulation of blood sugar levels and appetite: Due to its slower digestibility, inulin helps to keep blood sugar levels stable, prevent cravings and increase feelings of fullness.
  • Sugar substitute and calorie reduction: It has a natural sweetness with almost zero calories, which is why it is used in foods with reduced sugar content.
  • Mineral absorption: Research suggests that inulin may enhance the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, which benefits bone health.

Where is inulin found?

  • Naturally in foods: Jerusalem artichoke, chicory, artichokes, onions, garlic and dandelion.
  • As an additive: In numerous processed foods such as yoghurt, muesli, baked goods or ice cream.
  • Important note: Start with small amounts and make sure to drink plenty of water to help prevent possible bloating – especially if you have a sensitive gut.
