Sunfiber® (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) – Prebiotic fibres with good tolerability.

Sunfiber® (PHGG) is a high-quality source of dietary fibre and is extracted from the Cyamopsis tetragonoloba plant. Unlike conventional guar gum, this ingredient undergoes a special hydrolysis process, which significantly improves its solubility and tolerability.

Studies show that this prebiotic dietary fibre specifically promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli [1].  As comprehensive reviews demonstrate [2], this effect supports the function of the intestinal barrier and helps to create a balanced intestinal environment.

Research findings also show that PHGG can effectively attenuate the postprandial rise in blood glucose. Randomised controlled trials demonstrate a significant improvement in postprandial blood glucose levels with regular intake of this variant of guar gum [3].

Highly esterified apple pectin (72–76%) – regulation of cholesterol levels and satiety effect

Due to its high degree of esterification, this dietary fibre exhibits specific functional properties in the digestive tract. As meta-analyses show, regular consumption of this variant of pectin can help to keep blood cholesterol levels within the normal range [4].

The gel-forming properties of this specific type of pectin slow down gastric emptying, which is associated with a long-lasting feeling of satiety and a reduced glucose response after meals, as demonstrated in a randomised crossover study [5].  Due to these physiological effects, highly esterified apple pectin has been shown to be a valuable component in the regulation of metabolism.

In the small intestine, this dietary fibre forms a viscous gel matrix which influences the absorption of dietary fats and cholesterol whilst simultaneously supporting the excretion of bile acids – a mechanism that contributes to the regulation of cholesterol levels [6].

Low-esterified apple pectin (38–44%) – Ideal fermentation in the intestine

The physico-chemical properties of the second pectin variant differ from those of highly esterified pectin. In particular, this form is characterised by its optimal fermentability in the large intestine.

In vitro studies have shown that this pectin fraction is fermented by the gut microbiota into short-chain fatty acids such as acetate, propionate and butyrate.  Intestinal epithelial cells use these metabolites as an energy source; they promote the integrity of the intestinal barrier and modulate immunological processes in the gut.

Clinical studies also confirm that dietary fibre with a moderate degree of esterification can have positive effects on the composition of the gut microbiota and glucose metabolism.  According to recent studies, regular supplementation leads to an increase in beneficial bacterial strains and an improvement in glucose tolerance.

Notes

When dissolved in water, juice or tea, lumps may form, as some dietary fibres are not completely soluble. Drink at least 1.5 litres daily. For diabetics: apple pectin slows the rise in blood sugar levels. Also, allow at least 3 hours between taking this and high-fat supplements such as fish oil, as it binds cholesterol.
