General:

Sleep and wake times in humans are primarily determined by the brain. However, the body also plays an essential role in sleep: melatonin regulates the body's day-night rhythm. Melatonin secretion begins in the evening and reaches its peak between two and three o'clock in the morning. Disturbances in hormone production can lead to severe difficulties falling or staying asleep. The consequences are reduced performance and constant daytime tiredness, irritability, concentration difficulties up to depression and fear of the next night. Whether a disturbed hormonal balance is the cause of the sleep disturbances can be revealed by analysis of melatonin. The results serve as a basis for an individual therapy and should be discussed with a doctor or therapist.
