Spirulina belongs to the genus of cyanobacteria and is one of the oldest and, to this day, unchanged primordial forms of life existing on Earth. As a photosynthetic organism, spirulina is one of the first forms of life to have played a part in the formation of the oxygen-rich atmosphere and forms part of the evolutionary branch from which plants subsequently developed. Algae were the prerequisite and the forerunner for the subsequent emergence of the enormous diversity of oxygen-dependent life forms, and they are the guarantee of their continued existence. An estimated 90 per cent of the oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere is produced by algae, with only 10 per cent coming from the rest of the plant kingdom. This makes algae the most effective consumers of CO₂.
