Omega-3 Liquid Bundles

The bundle for anyone who prefers to take omega-3 in liquid form!

Vitals’ fish oil is characterised by a very high content of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA.

It is therefore ideal for improving a poor omega-3 index, as well as for taking a maintenance dose over a long period of time using just a very small amount.

There are 4 bundles to choose from:

Intensive: 2 x Omega-3 Index blood tests from Medivere plus 7 x Vitals Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg

An initial test is used to determine your requirements. If the test result is rather poor, with an index of 4–6 per cent (which is relatively common with a moderately poor diet), the first two bottles should be taken in such a way as to consume approximately 4,000 mg of DHA+EPA daily. This corresponds to 16 ml of fish oil, spread throughout the day. You should then reduce the amount to approximately 2000 mg of DHA/EPA per day, which would be 9 ml of fish oil. After 4–5 months, you can check the improvement with another Omega-3 Index test. If you have made good progress or your Omega-3 Index is above 7, you can reduce your intake to 5 ml daily; or, if your diet is sufficiently good – for example, if you eat fish regularly – 2.5 ml daily (approx. 600 mg DHA+EPA) will suffice.

Intensive Perfect: 2 x Omega-3 Index blood tests from MeinLabTest plus 7 x Vitals Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg

This offer is the same as the previous one, with the difference that MeinLabtest provides a much more detailed analysis of the laboratory results.

Standard: 1 x Omega-3 Index blood test from Medivere plus 6 x Vitals Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg

This bundle is suitable if you already know your Omega-3 Index, e.g. because you had it tested with us a few weeks ago and the result was in the mid-range, e.g. Omega-3 Index 6–8 per cent.
You should now start taking 2000 mg of DHA+EPA daily and, after 5–6 months, use the test included in the bundle to check again whether there has been an improvement. If the result has improved significantly, you can reduce the dose further, as you’ll want to benefit in the long term from the health benefits provided by 2000 mg of DHA/EPA daily.

Standard package: 1 x Omega-3 Index blood test from MeinLabtest plus 6 x Vitals Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg

This offer is the same as the previous one, with the difference that MeinLabtest provides a much more detailed analysis of the laboratory results.

Here are the product details for the omega-3 oil included in the bundle:

Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg with a high content of EPA and DHA

These essential omega-3 fatty acids are an indispensable part of our daily basic nutritional supplement. Softgel capsules are the form in which EPA and DHA are offered by most fish oil products. In certain situations, however, a liquid form may be advantageous, for example when high doses of EPA and DHA are required or if a person finds it difficult to swallow capsules. Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg contains particularly fresh and pure fish oil, which gives the product a pleasant taste and smell. Furthermore, the taste is further enhanced by the addition of a natural lemon flavouring. Compared to other liquid fish oils, which often leave an unpleasant fishy aftertaste, the neutral and mild flavour of this product is truly distinctive. As a result, Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg is also ideal for (young) children. The omega-3 fatty acids contained in this product are easily absorbed, as they are present in their natural, unprocessed triglyceride form.

Good for the heart, brain and eyes

The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA work together to benefit the heart. Furthermore, DHA helps maintain normal vision and healthy brain function. It is not without reason that the consumption of particularly oily fish species, which are naturally rich in EPA and DHA, has always featured in official dietary recommendations for a healthy diet. In practice, however, most people do not eat enough (oily) fish to reach the recommended daily intake of EPA and DHA. There are various reasons why these people do not reach the recommended daily intake. This can be problematic, as fish remains our main source of EPA and DHA.

The same official recommendations also point out that it is better not to eat fish too often. This is due to the contaminants that fish may contain as a result of environmental pollution (in particular dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals such as methylmercury). High-quality, purified fish oil supplements (such as Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg), which contain few or none of these contaminants, do not pose a problem in this regard. Consequently, more and more people are choosing to supplement their daily diet with a fish oil supplement in order to make the most of the health benefits of these long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Required EPA/DHA dosage for optimal omega-3 fatty acid status

Omega-3 fatty acid status refers to the amount of EPA and DHA present in the body. Nowadays, it is entirely possible to determine one’s omega-3 fatty acid status. One option for this is a blood test using a finger prick, which measures the omega-3 index. The omega-3 index, a reliable indicator of omega-3 fatty acid status, indicates the proportion of EPA and DHA in the overall fatty acid composition of the cell membranes of red blood cells. It also correlates well with the levels of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in tissues and organs, including the heart.

There is growing evidence that an Omega-3 Index of at least 8% is optimal. Research has shown that a significant proportion of the population – particularly those following a typically European diet (i.e. one characterised by excessive intake of omega-6 fatty acids) – need to consume high amounts of EPA/DHA to achieve this. With a low omega-3 index (around 4.5 per cent, which is the average in Western countries), supplementation with 2 grams of EPA/DHA usually results in the omega-3 index rising to around 8 per cent after about three months. To maintain this index, a daily intake of around 700–1200 mg of EPA/DHA is likely to be sufficient, depending on dietary habits.

Natural triglyceride form: Fats occur naturally in food and also in fish oil as triglycerides. They are composed of three fatty acid molecules bound to a single glycerol molecule. Unprocessed fish oil contains EPA or DHA as well as two other fatty acids. For this reason, the natural proportion of DHA/EPA in fish oil is no more than around 30%. In fish oil supplements in softgel capsules, a higher concentration (up to 80–90 per cent) is desirable, as space within a softgel capsule is limited. To achieve this, the fatty acid chains are separated from the glycerol during the manufacturing process and the EPA/DHA fatty acids are extracted; this additional processing allows for higher concentrations and different ratios of EPA and DHA to be achieved. One advantage of liquid fish oil is that it is not so severely constrained by limited space. Ultimately, it is no problem to measure out a larger quantity of the oil using a teaspoon or measuring spoon. This allows the fish oil to contain a sufficient natural concentration of omega-3. This means that no further production steps are required to increase the concentration of EPA and DHA. A liquid fish oil supplement offers the added advantage that the dose can be adjusted much more easily, for example when the product is used by several family members.

Permitted health claims:

  • EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function when taken at a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA (from 2.5 ml per day).
  • DHA helps maintain healthy brain function and good vision when taken at a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA (from 5 ml per day).
  • EPA and DHA help maintain healthy blood lipid levels when taken daily at a dose of 2 grams of EPA/DHA (from 10 ml per day).

Ingredients

Fish oil, lemon flavouring, antioxidants (rosemary extract, ascorbyl palmitate and extracts rich in tocopherols).

Recommended intake

Adults: 5–10 ml (1–2 teaspoons) per day, or as directed by a healthcare professional or as specified in the separate intake recommendations. The oil can be taken neat or mixed with cold drinks or food. A measuring spoon is included.

Note

The combined daily intake of EPA and DHA should not exceed 5 grams (approx. 4 teaspoons [= 20 ml] of Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg). If you suffer from or have suffered from atrial fibrillation, do not take doses exceeding 1000 mg of EPA/DHA without first consulting a doctor. Omega-3 fatty acids have a blood-thinning effect. Whilst this is generally beneficial, if you are already taking blood-thinning medication, you must discuss this with your doctor to ensure that the blood-thinning effects do not add up in an undesirable way.
