The important role of omega-3 fatty acids for our health

Until now, omega-3 fatty acids have primarily been credited with a preventative effect against arteriosclerosis and coronary heart disease. A protective effect against cardiac arrhythmias and the risk of sudden cardiac death has also come into focus in recent years. Recent scientific findings show that the omega-3 index is a significant risk factor for sudden cardiac death.

The reduction of triglyceride levels and the increase of HDL cholesterol levels are among the most important cardioprotective properties of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have a blood-pressure-lowering effect, expand the microcirculation, inhibit platelet aggregation and improve blood viscosity. It has also been demonstrated that they have a stabilising effect on carotid plaques. The most important cardioprotective effect of omega-3 fatty acids is their anti-arrhythmic action.

A positive influence of omega-3 fatty acids is also evident in mental disorders. Recent research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can positively affect schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and hyperactivity syndrome.

The test should be carried out after you have not eaten for 10 hours, so preferably in the morning. You should also avoid taking omega-3 supplements in the days before the test and not eat more fatty fish such as salmon or mackerel than you would normally, so as not to distort the result.
