The important role of omega-3 fatty acids in our health

Until now, omega-3 fatty acids have mainly been credited with a preventative effect against atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. In recent years, their protective effect against cardiac arrhythmias and the risk of sudden cardiac death has also come to the fore. The latest scientific findings show that the omega-3 index is a significant risk factor for sudden cardiac death.

Lowering triglyceride levels and increasing HDL cholesterol levels are among the most important cardioprotective properties of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids lower blood pressure, improve microcirculation, inhibit platelet aggregation and improve blood viscosity. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that they have a stabilising effect on carotid plaques. The most important cardioprotective effect of omega-3 fatty acids is their anti-arrhythmic action.

Omega-3 fatty acids also appear to have a positive influence on mental health conditions. Recent research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can have a positive effect on schizophrenia, manic-depressive disorders, depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

What is the ordering process?

Once you have placed your order, Medivere will send you the test kit you have requested, along with detailed instructions. The samples must be returned to Medivere in the enclosed, pre-paid postal bag. Once the results have been analysed, they will be sent to your address or made available on your Medivere customer page.

The test kit contains:

• 1 set of instructions for sample collection
• 2 lancets
• 1 resealable bag containing 1 Protein Saver Card
• 2 alcohol swabs
• 1 fingertip plaster
• 1 sample collection form
• 1 postal envelope

Once you have placed your order, Medivere will send you the test kit of your choice along with detailed instructions. Place your sample in a sample container, send it in the provided envelope to our partner laboratory, GANZIMMUN Diagnostics GmbH, and you will receive your results, including an assessment of your profile, within 10–14 working days.

Tip from EnergyVital

The test should be carried out after you have fasted for 10 hours, so ideally in the morning. You should also avoid taking omega-3 supplements and eating more oily fish such as salmon or mackerel than usual in the days leading up to the test, so as not to skew the results.
