Substances for the intestinal bacteria
In order for the intestine to work optimally, it needs certain ingredients. Fibre, which serves as food for the good intestinal bacteria, is very important. These are abundant in wholemeal products, vegetables, pulses and fruit. Probiotic foods, such as natural yoghurt, kefir or sauerkraut, provide live bacterial cultures that have a positive effect on the balance in the gut. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example from fish or linseed oil, are also good for the intestinal mucosa.
How digestion works
Digestion starts in the mouth, but most of it takes place in the small intestine. Here, food components are broken down into their smallest parts by enzymes and bile. Water and salts are then mainly absorbed in the large intestine, making the food pulp more solid. Peristalsis, an involuntary, wave-like movement of the intestinal muscles, constantly moves the food along. The digestive system absorbs nutrients into the blood.

A healthy intestine is very important for a good immune system because most of the body's defence cells are located there. Good digestion also has a positive effect on mood, as the gut produces hormones and messenger substances. Eating food with lots of fibre not only helps digestion, but also keeps you full for longer. Regular exercise and enough water or unsweetened tea also promote the function of the intestines.
