The mummy capsules for every day especially for women who choose capsules instead of tablets
The ingredients of Every Day Mum capsules are identical per two capsules to those of Every Day Mum tablets, except for choline (110 mg vs. 150 mg), vitamin C (80 mg vs. 200 mg), calcium (120 mg vs. 200 mg) and magnesium (60 mg vs. 100 mg). The capsules contain lower doses, as one tablet contains more than two capsules. The product is based on the latest scientific findings and has been adapted to current data on the nutritional status in Western Europe and the optimum amount to be consumed per nutrient.
Vitamin A should definitely be included in a multivitamin supplement for pregnant women
Many pregnant women are warned about the dangers of excessive vitamin A intake. However, there is a greater need for vitamin A during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For this reason, you should not be overly cautious with your vitamin A intake. That's why Everyday Mum contains 3 mg of natural beta-carotene (provitamin A) and 150 mcg of vitamin A every day. This is a very safe and desirable dosage of vitamin A. The body only converts as much beta-carotene into vitamin A as it needs, preventing excessive vitamin A levels.
Ideal amount to cover the increased requirement during pregnancy
Folic acid is generally known to be of great importance before and during pregnancy. Everyday Mum uses a high-quality, biologically active form of folic acid (folate) that is bound to glucosamine salt (Quatrefolic®). Thanks to this binding with glucosamine salt, the biologically active form can be kept stable and optimal absorption is guaranteed. 400 mcg of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate is contained in the formula per daily dose of two capsules.
Everyday Mama provides a high amount of 30 mcg of vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methyl- and adenosylcobalamin. These endogenous forms have the advantage that they are better absorbed and are available in the body for longer than the usual synthetic form of vitamin B12 in food supplements (cyanocobalamin). Choline is a nutrient that is particularly important during pregnancy and more and more is becoming known about it as a result of recent studies. The formula contains up to 110 mg of choline per two capsules.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women have a higher requirement for vitamin D. That is why the daily portion of Mum contains a high amount of vitamin D3 (25 mcg). It is also of plant origin and therefore suitable for vegans.
In general, women have a higher iron requirement than men. Pregnant women have an increased need for iron to promote cell and tissue production. This is why Mum's daily supplement contains a high daily dose of 28 mg iron, which comes from the stomach-friendly iron bisglycinate (Ferrochel®) - an easily absorbed amino acid chelate from Albion (TRAACS®). The formula also contains 200 mg of vitamin C, which supports iron absorption.
It also has a high iodine content (150 mcg), which contributes to normal growth in children.
The optimal form and dosage of B vitamins
The multis for daily use contain a high level of B vitamins, but this is acceptable for the body. Careful research has been carried out into daily requirements, average intakes and minimum levels. Not only are the latest scientific findings and reliable upper limits taken into account, but also how well the body is able to metabolise the various B vitamins.
In addition, all formulas contain the biologically active forms of vitamins B2 (riboflavin 5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal 5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms utilised by the body and research shows that they have a higher bioavailability in the body.
Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate as vitamin B6
Very high doses of vitamin B6 can occasionally cause tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. For this reason, a maximum safe upper limit for vitamin supplements in adults of 21 mg per day is adopted in the Netherlands. The Every Day Multis are far below this (maximum 4.2 mg). In addition, only pyridoxal-5′-phosphate (P-5′-P), the biologically active form of vitamin B6, is used, not pyridoxine HCl, which still has to be metabolised in the body. It is currently being investigated whether the occasional side effects mentioned above only occur with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCl and not, or to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Evidence suggests that only pyridoxine HCl is toxic to nerve cells in high doses.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is often used in food supplements for reasons of stability, is a synthetic form that does not occur naturally. It is present in food as folate. Folic acid obtained from food supplements must be converted by the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Studies show that this complex conversion process is far from optimal in a considerable number of people. Adding 5-MTHF eliminates this problem.
Jeden Tag Multis utilise the superior form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate combined with glucosamine salt (under the brand name Quatrefolic®). Thanks to this binding with plant-derived glucosamine salt, the biologically active form can be kept stable and optimum absorption ensured. Research has shown that Quatrefolic® has better water solubility, stability and bioavailability. 5-MTHF can also pass through the blood-brain barrier, unlike the "normal" (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 in the form of adenosyl- and methylcobalamin
The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is a complicated process. In addition, some evidence suggests that the NRV (formerly RDA) of 2.5 µg per day is set too low and that the requirement can vary in healthy adults and older people and can rise above 20 µg per day. To ensure the safety of vitamin B12 supplementation and to take account of the occasional difficulty in absorbing B12 from food and supplements, the Every Day Multis contain higher doses of the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Cyanocobalamin, a cheaper, synthetic form of vitamin B12 that does not occur naturally and must be converted into active forms by the body, is contained in many other B12 products and multivitamins. This separates the cyanide portion of the cobalamin (B12), which is then broken down by the body. Studies indicate that the bioavailability of vitamin B12 in the form of methyl- and adenosylcobalamin is higher than that of cyanocobalamin.
Vitamin D in high quantities, from plant sources
In recent years, European government agencies have recognised that the value for adequate vitamin D intake from food (15 µg) should be set higher and that the maximum permitted dose (100 µg) could be increased. In the Netherlands, there is still reluctance and it has been suggested that 10 µg would be sufficient and that the upper limit should be 75 µg. Strangely enough, the NRV (or RDA) is still 5 µg. However, the importance of higher doses has long been recognised in the orthomolecular world. It is recommended by renowned vitamin D experts that calcidiol levels should be at least 75 nmol/l in adults. To maintain such a vitamin D level, a daily oral D3 vitamin D dose of around 25-75 µg is required.
The multivitamin preparations for daily use contain high amounts of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Compared to vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), this form is significantly more effective in increasing vitamin D levels. The new Jeden Tag Multis also rely on plant-based vitamin D3 (vitamin D3V®). This is because it is made from algae and not sheep's wool fat (like most vitamin D3 products), which means that all multis in the Jeden Tag range are now also suitable for vegans.
Vitamin K1 and K2
The Jeden Tag multivitamins now contain a small amount of vitamin K1 and an increased amount of vitamin K2. While vitamin K1 is primarily absorbed in the liver and is particularly responsible for the activation of coagulation factors, vitamin K2 is characterised by a higher bioavailability. It is distributed much more in the body tissue and therefore activates other vitamin K-dependent enzymes such as osteocalcin and MGP more effectively. Among other things, these ensure that the calcium is absorbed correctly and reaches the right place, the bones.
For blood clotting, which is essential for survival, the body first uses vitamin K. As vitamin K2 is much more expensive than vitamin K1, a small amount of K1 is added to the multivitamins. This allows K1 to be used for the primary blood clotting function and K2 for the other, also very important functions.
Incidentally, the regular NRV for vitamin K is based on the amount required for normal blood clotting. Strangely enough, the optimum dosage of vitamin K for other body processes that depend on this vitamin has not been taken into account.
Stability of vitamin K2
It appears that vitamin K2 is a very sensitive substance. The content of this vitamin in a tablet or capsule decreases particularly quickly when it is combined with calcium and/or magnesium. It is a real technical challenge to use vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium. That's why Vitals uses a K2VITAL™ DELTA branded K2 supplement that remains stable in a formula with many of these minerals. A patented microencapsulation process protects the fat-soluble K2 particles from reacting with other ingredients with two layers. The stability of K2VITAL™ DELTA was tested by Vitals in an independent laboratory and the result was that it is the best product. A comparison was made with other brands of vitamin K2, especially in combination with the ingredients of Vitals products. It was concluded that K2VITAL™ DELTA was superior to the other K2 ingredients, that the K2 content remained stable and that it was essential to protect K2.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
The multis now contain calcium and magnesium from the Aquamin® brand, which are extracted from the sea. The tablets thus achieve significantly higher doses than the previously used compound forms, and the absorption of these ingredients has been proven to be effective.
Aquamin magnesium is extracted from the seawater of the Irish Sea and research has shown that it is highly bioavailable to the body. The raw material contains around 35% elemental magnesium as well as small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
The calcium (aquamin calcium) is extracted from the red algae Lithothamnium calcareum. This type of algae absorbs minerals and trace elements from the sea and stores them. In nature it has a beautiful red or pink colour, but after its death it calcifies and takes on a white or light grey colour. Only calcified red algae from the waters along the Icelandic coast are harvested. In addition to a calcium content of 32%, the raw material also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
Perhaps the synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium is one explanation for the better absorption and the impressive studies that have been carried out with it.
Iron, zinc, copper and manganese in the form of amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
Amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) are used for the minerals iron, zinc, copper and manganese. Each magnesium particle is powerfully bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this compact form reach the small intestine easily and are absorbed there very effectively. Vitals also makes a conscious selection of amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, which can be recognised by the TRAACS® brand, which stands for "The Real Amino Acid Chelate System". This brand serves to differentiate itself from other, possibly inferior or unstable amino acid chelates. Across the globe, Albion holds more than 100 patents that protect the process, research and structure behind its amino acid chelate minerals.
Unique: choline in relatively high doses
Choline has been used more or less as a standard ingredient in multivitamin supplements for some time, but almost always in low doses (10 to 30 mg) as little was known about it. But this is changing! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims for choline, which apply to a dose of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal fat metabolism, homocysteine metabolism and healthy liver function. Based on clinical research, particularly to determine daily requirements, an RDA of 550 mg/day was first established in 2016 in the U.S. In 2016, EFSA concluded that choline is an essential nutrient, but recommended nutrient values (NRVs) have not yet been established. The adequate daily intake was set at 400 mg, based on the average intake in European countries and not on the American study, which found 550 mg/day. The average intake in adult Europeans varies between 291 and 468 mg per day. That's plenty of reason to include a generous dose of choline in a daily multivitamin!
In our multis for daily use, we use choline from VitaCholine®. This brand epitomises the highest quality and extensive research has been carried out with it.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids. These substances are highly concentrated in the body, particularly in the retina and the macula lutea ("yellow spot"). Lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be produced by the body on its own; instead, they must be ingested through food. They are found in green leafy vegetables and in red, yellow and orange-coloured fruit and vegetables. Meso-zeaxanthin is only found in small quantities in food (e.g. in prawns, salmon skin and trout skin and meat). It is mainly formed in the retina by converting lutein through an enzymatic reaction. However, it can be taken with supplements. Meso-zeaxanthin has only recently been recognised as an excellent supplement and should be taken in preference to lutein and zeaxanthin alone.
