Dietary fibre - essential for digestion
Dietary fibres are largely indigestible food components, mostly carbohydrates, which are mainly found in plant-based foods. They are mainly found in cereals, fruit, vegetables and pulses. Fibre is essential for healthy digestion and the prevention of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Although the German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends at least 30 grams of fibre a day, many people do not achieve this level through their diet alone. Fibre is not only important for areas that are already generally known to the population, especially digestion. There are also far less well-known but very important tasks to be mentioned. For example, some dietary fibres can bind and excrete toxins, such as pectins. Fibre can also be able to bind and excrete bile acid - which means that the liver has to produce new bile from cholesterol, thereby reducing the cholesterol level in the body... Read more

Common forms of nutritional supplements
If the intake of wholemeal products, pulses and vegetables is not sufficient, supplements can help:
- Psyllium husks (psyllium): Particularly effective for constipation and for regulating bowel movements.
- Inulin: A soluble fibre (often from chicory) that acts as a prebiotic and feeds the good intestinal bacteria.
- Acacia fibres: Considered to be particularly well tolerated and promote a healthy microbiome.
- Guar gum or pectin: Often available in powder form for stirring into food or drinks.
Important instructions for use
- Increase the amount you drink: Dietary fibre binds an extremely large amount of water, so without sufficient fluid intake (at least 1.5-2 litres daily), preparations can have the opposite effect and lead to severe constipation.
- Gradual increase: To avoid flatulence and abdominal pain, the dose should be increased gradually over several weeks to allow the intestinal flora to adapt.
- Quality of the source: Experts recommend obtaining dietary fibre primarily from natural foods, as these also contain important vitamins and secondary substances.
Advantages at a glance
- Satiety: They swell in the stomach and thus support weight management.
- Blood sugar: They slow down sugar absorption and prevent cravings.
- Intestinal health: They serve as food for beneficial bacteria and promote intestinal movement.
