Folic acid - only useful in the right combination
This enormously important vitamin is not only of great importance for pregnant women. However, around 50% of people are unable to utilise normal, cheap folic acid in food supplements and medicines due to a metabolic peculiarity. We therefore only use 5-MTHF (methylfolate), the only form that really benefits everyone..... Read more

What is folic acid?
Folic acid (vitamin B9) is a water-soluble B vitamin that is essential for cell division, blood formation and growth processes. It can be found in synthetic form as "folic acid" (e.g. in food supplements) and in natural form as "folate" (in foods such as green vegetables, pulses and liver). A deficiency can cause anaemia, tiredness and growth retardation. However, it is particularly dangerous during pregnancy as it contributes to the prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
Important properties of folic acid
- Cell division and growth: Folic acid plays an important role in the formation of new healthy cells, including red blood cells
- Haematopoiesis: it is crucial for the development and formation of new red blood cells
- Metabolism: The vitamin plays a role in the breakdown of homocysteine, a metabolic product whose high levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Prevention of neural tube defects: Adequate folic acid intake during pregnancy is crucial to prevent severe neural tube malformations such as open back.
Occurrence:
- Naturally in food (folate): Mainly in dark leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce, pulses, wholemeal products, liver and oranges
- Synthetic form (folic acid): Found in dietary supplements and fortified foods.
Special features:
- Folic acid is water-soluble and cannot be produced or stored by the body, so it must be taken in daily with food.
- Sensitivity: The vitamin reacts sensitively to heat, light and oxygen. Therefore, folic acid can be lost if not prepared and stored properly.
Pregnancy and deficiency
- Undersupply: A deficiency can lead to anaemia, fatigue, difficulties with concentration and increased susceptibility to infections.
- Pregnancy : Supplementation is recommended for women of childbearing age to prevent neural tube defects in the foetus. The requirement has increased significantly during this period and should begin before a planned pregnancy.
