Keep your eyes open for a healthy diet!
Our eyes are high-performance organs that are exposed to harmful influences such as UV light, blue light from screens and oxidative stress on a daily basis. A good diet is the basis for good vision in the long term. However, at certain times of life or with a poor diet, dietary supplements can help to provide the eyes with the necessary nutrients. They protect and maintain normal visual function by supplying the body with special vitamins and minerals... Read more

Important nutrients for the eyes
Vitamin A (or beta-carotene, from which vitamin A is derived) is contained in many products and is very important for the visual process, especially for day and night vision and adaptation to twilight. As the eye is very active, it needs protection from harmful substances. Vitamin C and vitamin E act as antioxidants that protect the cells from oxidative stress and promote eye health.
The trace element zinc is also very important. It is present in large quantities in the retina and plays an important role in the eye's metabolism, as it helps to utilise vitamin A from food.
Protection through pigments and omega-3 fatty acids
The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are crucial for the health of the area of the eye with which we see most clearly (macula). As the body cannot produce these pigments itself, they must be obtained from food, e.g. from green leafy vegetables such as spinach or kale. These substances act as a natural "blue light filter" by absorbing strong light and thus protecting the retina from damage caused by light.
Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, are also important. They are a building block of retinal cells and help to maintain normal vision. They can also strengthen the tear film, which can be particularly helpful for dry eyes.
Summary of use
Eye supplements can help to cover the need for nutrients when this cannot be covered by the usual diet, for example in old age or with prolonged use of screens. However, they are no substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Conscious intake can make the eyes more resistant to external stresses and contribute to the long-term maintenance of visual acuity.
