Ribose - a building block in the "fuel of the cells"
Ribose is an important component of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the universal energy carrier in the cell. Together with the base adenine and three phosphate groups, it forms the ATP molecule, which supplies energy for numerous cellular processes like a battery for electrical devices. Ribose is also contained in RNA, and it has an essential function in energy metabolism.
Context:
- Composition of ATP: A molecule of ATP is made up of the nitrogen base adenine, the sugar ribose and three phosphate groups with a high energy density.
- Cellular function: Ribose is therefore one of the indispensable components of the "fuel" that cells need to fulfil their functions.
- Energy supply: When a cell needs energy, a phosphate group is split off from ATP, creating ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and releasing energy; ribose is retained and reused to synthesise new ATP
