Devil's claw
African devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), also known as devil's claw or bramble for short, is a plant species in the sesame family (Pedaliaceae).
African devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a plant that thrives in the dry savannahs of South Africa and is named after its barbed fruits. This herb has been used in its native country for a long time to treat digestive problems. Harpagophytum can relieve bloating and flatulence, promotes the production of gastric juice and bile and has a calming effect on the musculoskeletal system. For successful use of African devil's claw, all components of its root should be used, not just the isolated main molecule harpagoside. They can only unfold their full spectrum of effects together.
The tuberous roots of devil's claw are rich in iridoid glycosides, with harpagoside being the main component. These bitter substances of pronounced strength promote the secretion of saliva and gastric juices and can help with digestive problems such as bloating, flatulence, stomach pressure, heartburn and abdominal pain. Devil's claw has become particularly well known for its positive effect on the musculoskeletal system. Here too, the iridoid glycosides together with various phenylethanol derivatives are probably responsible for this. It relaxes muscles, tendons and joints.
