Devil's claw
African devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a plant that thrives in the dry savannahs of South Africa and gets its name from its barbed fruits. This herb has been used in its native country for a long time to treat digestive problems. Harpagophytum can relieve bloating and flatulence, promotes the production of gastric juice and bile and has a calming effect on the musculoskeletal system. Active ingredients of devil's claw
The tuberous roots of devil's claw are rich in iridoid glycosides, with harpagoside being the main component. These bitter substances are very strong and promote the secretion of saliva and gastric juices and can help with digestive problems such as bloating, flatulence, stomach pressure, heartburn and abdominal pain. Devil's claw has become particularly well known for its positive effect on the musculoskeletal system. Here too, the iridoid glycosides together with various phenylethanol derivatives are probably responsible for this. It relaxes muscles, tendons and joints.
