Semi-essential amino acid
There are around 500 amino acids that occur in nature. 20 of these amino acids act as building blocks for protein in the human body and are referred to as "essential amino acids". These essential amino acids are categorised into the groups "essential", "semi-essential" and "non-essential".
L-carnitine is one of the so-called semi-essential amino acids. This means that the body is able to produce some of these amino acids itself, while it is dependent on food for the other part in order to cover its daily requirements. In food, it is mainly found in (red) meat and to a much lesser extent in plant foods. Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR for short) is an acetylated variant of carnitine. Carnitine is synthesised in the liver, kidneys and brain from the amino acids lysine and methionine, with vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6 and niacin acting as cofactors. Depending on requirements, carnitine can be converted into acetyl-L-carnitine and vice versa.
The advantage of supplementing with acetyl-L-carnitine compared to L-carnitine is that it penetrates the blood-brain barrier more easily.

Ingredients
N-acetyl-L-carnitine HCl, vegetable capsule (pullulan, from fermented manioc starch), anti-caking agent (rice fibres).
Recommended dosage
As a food supplement for adults, take 2-3 capsules per day with water between meals (at least half an hour before or two hours after eating).
Storage instructions
Store in a cool, dry place away from light (not in the refrigerator).
