Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetylated form of L-carnitine, a semi-essential amino acid. Our body can produce L-carnitine itself, but is dependent on our diet (mainly red meat) to cover our daily requirements.
The great advantage of acetyl-L-carnitine is that, unlike L-carnitine, it can cross the blood-brain barrier, which means that all the positive properties of L-carnitine also benefit the nerve cells in our brain.
An additional supply of acetyl-L-carnitine is recommended for vegetarians and vegans as well as older people who have a poor and one-sided diet. But younger people also appreciate acetyl-L-carnitine to compensate for an increased requirement.
