Alpha-lipoic acid is an extraordinary substance. The vitamin-like, sulphur-containing fatty acid is universally active throughout the body. It is both fat- and water-soluble and can even cross the blood-brain barrier.Normally, we can meet our alpha-lipoic acid requirements through our diet (especially meat and offal). Alpha-lipoic acid occurs as R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid and S-alpha-lipoic acid. However, only R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid corresponds to the body's own, natural form and is physiologically effective. Normally, their ratio to each other is 50:50 - due to the production process. In cheap food supplements, the proportion of R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid is significantly lower due to superfluous fillers such as magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide. As a result, a 600 mg capsule may only contain 100 to 150 mg of bioactive lipoic acid.
