Choline - An underestimated (vitamin B-like) nutrient for a long time
But this is increasingly changing. In 2012, the European Commission decided that three health claims for choline may be considered scientifically proven. It was found to be important for normal fat metabolism, normal homocysteine metabolism and a well-functioning liver. And in 2016, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) decided that choline is an essential nutrient that the body cannot produce in sufficient quantities itself and that it must be taken in largely through food. The appropriate intake in Europe has been set at 400 mg/day for adults, based on the average intake in European countries. For pregnant women, 480 mg/day is recommended, for breastfeeding women even 520 mg per day. In 2016, a sufficient intake was also set in America for the first time. However, this is based on clinical studies that were carried out specifically to determine the daily requirement (sufficient for a healthy liver) and resulted in a value of 550 mg/day. The average intake of adults in Europe varies between 291 and 468 mg/day.
As a component of phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin), choline is an important component of cell membranes. It also plays a role in fat metabolism: the choline derivative phosphatidylcholine is a component of VLDL cholesterol and is involved in the conversion and removal of fats from the liver. Choline is therefore important for a well-functioning and healthy liver. It is also required for the formation of betaine, which in turn is involved as a methyl donor in the remethylation of homocysteine in the liver. Normal homocysteine metabolism contributes to the maintenance of normal homocysteine blood levels.
Synergy
Choline interacts with vitamins B6, B12, folate and SAMe. In addition, phosphatidylcholine, which is produced via the SAMe-dependent metabolic pathway, is enriched with DHA and forms phosphatidylcholine-DHA. Choline and DHA work together synergistically.

Vitals, our new brand from 2025
We are constantly on the lookout for brands that represent our ideals: The highest quality, consistent omission of superfluous additives such as titanium dioxide or porcine gelatine, very good value for money and absolute reliability in delivery to us and therefore also to customers.
This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
Manufacturer's address: Vitals Voedingssupplementen BV, Pieter Lieftinckweg 29, 1505 HX Zaandam, Netherlands. E-mail: customer service@vitals.eu.
