No connective tissue without collagen

Collagen is not only a term used in skin care, but is also well known among athletes. What exactly is collagen and why is it so popular in these areas? We explain in this blog post.

As a naturally occurring protein, collagen is an essential component of connective tissue. It is the most abundant protein in our body and makes up around 25-30% of all proteins. Collagen forms a kind of scaffold that holds our body together and gives it structure, strength and elasticity.

Structurally, collagen consists of long, fibre-like molecules arranged in bundles. There are different types of collagen, each of which has its own specific functions and properties. For example, collagen type I is the most abundant collagen in the skin, bones, tendons and blood vessels, while collagen type II is mainly found in cartilage tissue.

The main function of collagen is to hold tissues and organs together and strengthen them. In the skin, collagen provides firmness and elasticity. It also supports wound healing by promoting skin regeneration. In addition, collagen provides a secure base in bones, tendons, ligaments and cartilage tissue.

Over time, the natural production of collagen in the skin decreases. Exposure to harmful environmental factors such as UV radiation, smoking and stress can accelerate the breakdown of collagen.

What are the benefits of collagen for the skin?

  1. Collagen's ability to provide elasticity and firmness is particularly popular as we age.
  2. Collagen helps to strengthen the skin structure.
  3. Collagen can bind moisture in the skin and keep it hydrated and supple. Collagen plays a role in skin regeneration and can support wound healing.
  4. The presence of collagen in bones, tendons and ligaments makes collagen interesting for people who do intensive sport. Athletes involved in fast-paced sports that put a lot of strain on bones, tendons and ligaments can benefit from collagen.

Collagen is mainly found in animal products and is mainly obtained from animal tissue. Bones and cartilage from cattle, pigs, chickens and fish are particularly rich in collagen. Collagen-rich foods include bone broth, gelatine and certain types of meat and fish with a high connective tissue content. Vegan and vegetarian people in particular should therefore pay special attention to a sufficient supply of collagen.
