The main representative of the estrogens (estrone [E1], estradiol [E2] and estriol [E3]) is the biologically active (most effective) estradiol. Estradiol is produced in the ovaries, the placenta, the adrenal cortex and the testicles or by conversion from precursors of androgens (testosterone). Estradiol is responsible for the formation of secondary sexual characteristics (breast development, fat distribution) and reproductive function. Estradiol also builds up tissue in women and influences the female body silhouette. Estradiol drops significantly in women after the menopause, which can trigger numerous complaints.
