Green tea, one of the oldest drinks in the world!
Its history goes back more than 5000 years. Green tea is particularly popular in China and Japan and is also becoming increasingly popular in the West. This has always had a lot to do with its health benefits. Green tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis tea plant, which grows mainly in South East Asia. It is an unfermented type of tea in which the tea leaves are treated with water vapour, which protects the important ingredients (polyphenols and catechins) from oxidation. In black tea, the tea leaves are subjected to fermentation, which greatly reduces the catechin content. Research has shown that it is the catechins that are responsible for the health benefits of tea. The most important catechin in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This product is standardised to 120 mg catechins and 75 mg EGCG per capsule, and the unique manufacturing process means that these catechins are absorbed twice as well as conventional green tea.
Improved absorption thanks to Phytosome® technology
Vital's Green Tea PS is better absorbed thanks to the use of the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian manufacturer Indena. The term phytosome is made up of the Greek words "phuton" (plant) and "soma" (body). The patented manufacturing process reduces the natural clumping of certain poorly absorbable phytonutrients (e.g. polyphenols from green tea) and mixes them with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not encapsulated (as in liposomes), but a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles is created. Polyphenols (such as the catechins in green tea) have a natural affinity for phospholipids. The result is the formation of phytosomes, whereby the polyphenols adhere to the phospholipids. In this way they are particularly well absorbed. Cell membranes (e.g. those of small intestinal cells) themselves also consist of a phospholipid bilayer, which allows these phytosomes to pass through the intestinal wall easily and the active ingredients to be absorbed into the bloodstream (see Figure 1). Studies have shown that the absorption of catechins from green tea is more than doubled by this phytosome technology.
Unlike liposome technology
In a liposome, the active ingredient is located in the centre of a globule with a double layer of phospholipids. Phytosome technology is a truly homogeneous mixture and the active ingredient is not encapsulated. This means that far fewer phospholipids are needed than with liposomes.
