L-glutamine is the most common amino acid in our body, accounting for 20 % of the total. It is mainly found in muscle cells, where it is also produced.
As a building block for protein synthesis, L-glutamine plays a central role in the metabolism of all plants, animals, fungi and bacteria. It is found in large quantities in wheat protein as well as in dairy products, soya (soya protein) and maize (maize protein).
L-glutamine is important as a precursor of glutathione, glutamic acid and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).
As a powder, it is particularly suitable for people who prefer to dose glutamine individually or prefer to take it in drinks, protein shakes, muesli and the like.
Tasks of L-glutamine
L-glutamine is an important building block for the formation of glutathione, a sulphur-containing amino acid that acts as a radical scavenger in our body.
Part of L-glutamine is converted into glutamic acid, which can bind ammonia, a degradation product of our normal metabolism. L-glutamine is also the precursor of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is an important neurotransmitter and stimulates the release of somatotropin.
