An amino acid for nerves and good sleep
There are around 500 amino acids that occur in nature. 20 of these amino acids act as building blocks for protein in the human body and are known as "essential amino acids". These essential amino acids are categorised into the groups "essential", "semi-essential" and "non-essential". L-tryptophan is one of the essential amino acids, i.e. the body cannot produce it itself from other amino acids and is completely dependent on food intake to cover its daily requirements.
The tryptophan content in food is too low to be used as a basis for the production of food supplements. Tryptophan for food supplements is normally obtained through a customised fermentation process. As microorganisms are able to synthesise tryptophan themselves, this property is used in the process. The natural L-form of tryptophan is formed in the process. The bioavailability of the natural L-form can be reduced by the synthetic D-form, as it has no effect itself. D-tryptophan should therefore not be used as a supplement.
Among other things, tryptophan serves as a precursor for niacin (vitamin B3), 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin. It can cross the blood-brain barrier, but is sensitive to competition with other amino acids. It is therefore advisable to take a tryptophan supplement on an empty stomach and separately from other amino acids.

This is very difficult because such companies are extremely rare among the mass of manufacturers of food supplements that are now on the market. But we have managed to find them again, with Vitals from the Netherlands!
