Milk thistle (also known as milk thistle or Silybum marianum)
The name "milk thistle" is derived from the legend that the white spots on the leaves come from the milk of the Virgin Mary. In the production of milk thistle supplements, the seeds (fruits) are usually extracted. The black pericarp contains flavonolignans (including silymarin with the main component silybin), flavonoids and phenol derivatives. Silybin is the main component. The milk thistle PS from Vitals contains the patented ingredient Siliphos®, an extract from milk thistle standardised to silybin, whose bioavailability is significantly increased by the combination with phosphatidylcholine (Phytosome® technology).
Increased bioavailability thanks to Phytosome® technology
By using the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian company Indena, the bioavailability of milk thistle PS has been significantly increased. The word "phytosome" is made up of the Greek words phuton (plant) and soma (body, particle). The patented process reduces the natural clumping of certain poorly absorbable phytonutrients (such as those from milk thistle) and combines them with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) from sunflower lecithin. The active ingredients are not enclosed in capsules like liposomes, but form a homogeneous mixture of small, easily absorbable particles. Milk thistle contains active ingredients that are both hydrophilic (flavonoids, phenol derivatives) and lipophilic (flavonolignans). Phospholipids have lipophilic properties on one side and hydrophilic properties on the other. Phytonutrients therefore often adhere to phospholipids and form so-called phytosomes. The cell membranes (such as those of intestinal cells) are made up of a phospholipid bilayer to enable good absorption of the active ingredients (see Figure 1). Research has shown that the bioavailability of the silybin in Siliphos® is increased 10-fold by using this phytosome technology compared to a normal milk thistle extract.
Different from liposome technology
In a liposome, the active ingredient is located in the centre of a globule with a double layer of phospholipids. Phytosome® technology is a truly homogeneous mixture and the active ingredient is not encapsulated. This means that far fewer phospholipids are needed than with liposomes.
About Indena
Indena is an Italian manufacturer with branches all over the world and an expert in the field of phytonutrients. Through much research and technological development, they deliver high quality products with a good base and excellent absorbability.

E-Mail: kundendienst@vitals.eu.
