Inulin

Inulin is a natural dietary fibre found in chicory, Jerusalem artichokes and onions. Like all dietary fibres, inulin stimulates the bowels and combats constipation. Above all, it has a function as a prebiotic, i.e. it serves as food for the "good" intestinal bacteria so that they can multiply well. Inulin is primarily used as a prebiotic fibre that nourishes beneficial intestinal bacteria, strengthens the microbiome and regulates digestion (especially against constipation), thereby supporting the immune system. At the same time, by acting as a sugar substitute, it can reduce calories, increase satiety, stabilise blood sugar levels and promote the absorption of minerals such as calcium.... Read more

Essential tasks in the body:

  • Support of the intestinal flora (prebiotic): In the large intestine, inulin is fermented by beneficial bacteria (such as bifidobacteria), which promotes their growth and activity.
  • Optimisation of digestion: By binding water, increasing stool volume and stimulating intestinal movements, it helps to prevent constipation.
  • Strengthening the immune defence: A well-functioning immune system is closely linked to healthy intestinal flora, which is supported by inulin.
  • Regulation of blood sugar levels and appetite: Due to its slower digestibility, inulin helps to keep blood sugar levels constant, prevent cravings and intensify the feeling of satiety.
  • Sugar replacement and calorie reduction: It has a natural sweetness with almost zero calories, which is why it is used in foods with reduced sugar content.
  • Mineral absorption: Research suggests that inulin can promote the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, which benefits bone health.

Where is inulin found?

  • Naturally in foods: Jerusalem artichokes, chicory, artichokes, onions, garlic and dandelion.
  • As an additive: In numerous processed foods such as yoghurt, muesli, baked goods and ice cream.
  • Important note: Start with small amounts and make sure you drink enough water to prevent any flatulence - especially if you have a sensitive bowel.
