Mannose

Although mannose is excreted in the urine, it has the ability to bind superfluous substances and take them with it. This makes bladder-friendly cranberry all the more useful! The simple sugar D-mannose is best known for supporting urinary tract health by preventing bacteria (especially E. coli) from attaching to the bladder wall; instead, they bind to the mannose and are flushed out with the urine, which can prevent or alleviate bladder inflammation. Mannose also serves the body as a building block for glycoproteins and is important for cell surface recognition and immune regulation. It is also used in skin care products for moisturising and cell renewal.... Read more

Tasks in the organism

  • Protection of the urinary tract: This is the best known function; mannose binds with bacteria and enables them to be flushed out before they can cause an infection.
  • Component of glycoproteins: Mannose plays an important role in the structure of glycoproteins, which are located on cell surfaces and act as recognisable markers.
  • Immunomodulation: There are indications that mannose could promote immune regulation and possibly help with autoimmune diseases such as asthma.
  • Skin care: In cosmetics, mannose moisturises, reduces wrinkles and supports cell renewal.

Key features

  • Hardly metabolised: D-mannose is hardly metabolised by the body for energy production; instead it is transported unchanged to the kidneys and bladder.
  • Well tolerated: Generally considered to be very well tolerated, but can lead to diarrhoea in rare cases.
  • No development of resistance: Unlike antibiotics, bacteria cannot develop resistance to mannose.
  • Use (often as a dietary supplement): For prevention and as a supportive measure for bladder infections (cystitis).

Drink plenty of fluids to help flush out the bacteria. The treatment of infections should always be discussed with a doctor.
