Microalgae from controlled quality
Spirulina and chlorella are unicellular microalgae. Chlorella is a green algae and spirulina is a blue-green algae. As microalgae, spirulina and chlorella are very small. They have a diameter of just 5 to 10 micrometres. By comparison, a pinhead has a diameter of 1000 to 3000 micrometres.
Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a microalgae (blue-green algae) that colonises shallow, subtropical to tropical waters and has been used as food by humans in these waters since time immemorial. Unlike other microalgae, it has no cell walls, produces oxygen and contains large amounts of chlorophyll a. Other pigments that overlay the chlorophyll green give the microalgae its typical green-bluish colour.
Chlorella (Pyrenoidesa) belongs to the freshwater green algae genus of the Chlorellaceae family, which is found worldwide. The species name pyrenoidosa refers to the presence of a pyrenoid within the Chlorella chloroplasts. The high chlorophyll content gives the chlorella algae a juicy deep green colour.
Note: Spirulina is not suitable for people with phenylketonuria as it contains phenylalanine, which could aggravate phenylketonuria.
