It also helps the body to make iron more easily accessible from its own stores - an important prerequisite for a good iron level in the blood.

Difference between vitamin A (retinol) and provitamin A (beta-carotene)

Two forms of vitamin A, beta-carotene and retinol, are contained in food supplements. Beta-carotene is called provitamin A because the body has to convert it into vitamin A. Beta-carotene has the advantage that its conversion in the body is controlled in such a way that too much vitamin A is never produced.

However, there is also a disadvantage: the conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A is not always efficient. This means that there is no certainty about the amount of vitamin A that is ultimately obtained from beta-carotene. In situations where there is an additional need for vitamin A, it may make sense to choose a dietary supplement with readily available retinol. A mixture of retinol and beta-carotene is also sometimes used in pregnancy vitamins.

Important to note: In Belgium and the Netherlands, the content of vitamin A (retinol) in food supplements is legally limited to 1200 µg per day, as this amount is also safe for pregnant women.
