Methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin - the best vitamin B12!
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) has a fairly recent history. It was only discovered in 1948. It is a very complex, large molecule and is required for the development of all cells in the body. Nerve cells in particular suffer from a deficiency. The best-selling B12 is the cheap cyanocobalamin. Although this is effective, it is not optimal as it first has to be converted for absorption, releasing the not entirely uncritical cyanogen compound (better known as hydrocyanic acid).
Methylcobalamin is the form the body needs and is much better absorbed without conversion. The biological activity of methylcobalamin is increased by probiotic bacteria and beetroot.
There is another form of vitamin B12 that is even better than the already very good form methylcobalamin: adenosylcobalamin!
Because of its very high price, it is rarely used in food supplements.
In the new improved formulation of Natur Vital B12-SL from 2020, 50% adenosylcobalamin is now used! Both are biologically active forms.
Who needs to pay attention to vitamin B12
Vegans and some vegetarians who do not consume milk and eggs must pay attention to their vitamin B12 supply.
Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the large intestine. However, a significant proportion is also formed by the bacteria in the large intestine.
People with chronic bowel problems (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease) must therefore pay close attention to their vitamin B12 supply, as must people without a large intestine (e.g. after bowel cancer surgery).
The reason for this is that these people do not produce enough of their own B12.
