Vitamin B12 - the quality is crucial
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) was only discovered in 1948. It is a very complex, large molecule and is required for the development of all cells in the body. Nerve cells in particular suffer from a deficiency. The best-selling B12 is the artificial cyanocobalamin. Although this is effective, it is not optimal as it first has to be converted for absorption, releasing the not entirely uncritical cyanogen compound (better known as hydrocyanic acid). Methylcobalamin is the form required by the body and is much better absorbed without conversion. There is another form of vitamin B12 that is even better than the already very good form methylcobalamin: adenosylcobalamin! Folic acid has been added for even more vigour.
Not all folic acid is the same.
Folic acid, or more precisely folate, is available in its best form, methyltetrahydrofolate. The body needs it in this form. If you ingest simple folic acid, the body must first convert it into 5MTHF. Around 50 % of people are unable to do this due to a metabolic disorder, so it would be completely pointless for them to take simple, cheap folic acid. Such preparations would therefore have no protective function, e.g. against spina bifida in unborn children. With 5MHTF you play it safe, i.e. you are guaranteed to take the right form, even if you have not been tested for this metabolic disorder.
Nutritive properties
- Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy metabolism and has a function in cell division.
- Vitamin B12 contributes to the normal function of the nervous system and to normal mental function.
- Vitamin B12 and folic acid contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism and help to reduce tiredness and fatigue.
- Vitamin B12 contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and, like folic acid, contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
- Folate contributes to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy and to normal amino acid synthesis. It has a function in cell division.
