Vitamin D for healthy bones and a good immune system
EnergyBalance's vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is obtained from inactive yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae). Because it is in a form similar to food, the body can easily recognise and absorb it. This inactive yeast, which contains no living cells and cannot ferment, is also safe for people with yeast allergies. Vitamin D is particularly important for healthy bones, as it regulates calcium levels, and for muscle function, which is why it is also recommended for older people. This vitamin, whose levels are often low in northern countries in winter, is also crucial for a functioning immune system. One capsule covers the entire Swiss daily requirement; in the EU, up to 3 or 5 capsules can be taken.
Current advice on dosage
The reference values for adults for vitamin D were raised considerably years ago by the DGE, from 5 µg to 20 µg!
This means that one capsule contains 100% of the daily requirement according to the DGE, but as the scientifically outdated nutritional labelling regulations still apply to online shops, we have to state 400% in our nutritional table!
Here is the current DGE recommendation from 2012!
According to the DGE, adolescents and adults only consume 2 to 4 µg of vitamin D per day from food. This is nowhere near the estimated intake. The "rest" (around 16 to 18 µg of vitamin D) must be covered by the consumer through vitamin D formation in the skin - i.e. by spending a lot of time outdoors.
People who spend a lot of time outdoors (athletes, postmen, forestry workers, dog owners ...) should therefore cover their vitamin D requirement "by themselves".
People who are unable to do so (office workers, catering staff, senior citizens with limited mobility, bedridden people, couch potatoes ...) are well advised to have their vitamin D levels checked by their GP at their next laboratory check-up and to compensate for any deficiency. Diseases caused by vitamin D deficiency are manifold and can be serious.

- Vitamin D contributes to a normal calcium level in the blood.
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
- Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function.
- Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

*Reference value according to Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011
Please note: In Switzerland, the reference value is 20 µg, which is why this value is stated on the can as 100 % of the intake. In the EU, the absolutely outdated reference value of 5 µg has applied for decades, which is why we correctly state this as 400 % for an EU shop! Scientifically wrong, but bureaucratically correct, we don't want to violate the ultra-modern EU law....
