Astaxanthin, the inner sunscreen
Astaxanthin is a natural pigment that belongs to the xanthophyll class of carotenoids. It is responsible for the red colouring of crustaceans and is extracted from the algae Haematococcus pluvialis. Astaxanthin is structurally related to the well-known carotenoids ß-carotene, zeaxanthin and lutein, and thus shares many of the metabolic and physiological functions attributed to carotenoids. When the algae is exposed to high levels of UV light, it produces very large amounts of astaxanthin to protect itself from injury.
