Mindful micronutrient supply for women

The female body achieves amazing things every month and goes through challenging phases of change throughout its entire life. Starting with puberty, through possible pregnancies to the menopause. Phases that can be challenging not only for the body, but also for mental well-being. Being aware of what the female body achieves every month in each phase, it is all the more important to cater to its special needs and support it in the best possible way. A conscious supply of micronutrients can be a major component of this. This has a decisive influence on the hormone balance and is heavily dependent on a healthy diet with the right nutrients. Depending on the hormonal transition phase, some nutrients are particularly important. We would like to introduce you to 3 phases and look at which vitamins and micronutrients can be particularly helpful companions.

1. Menstruation

Menstruation accompanies every woman month after month and brings with it a number of ups and downs for the body and mood. Unpleasant pain in the lower abdomen in particular can affect everyday life. To give women more balance during this phase, yam has been a popular accompaniment for decades. The climbing plant from West Africa contains a particularly high proportion of disogenin. Diosgenin is a so-called phytohormone, which is similar in structure to the sex hormone progesterone. In its country of origin, yam is therefore even referred to as a "women's plant".

2. The contraceptive pill

The pill (oral contraceptives), as it is colloquially known, is still one of the most popular contraceptives on the market. There are so-called combination pills, which contain the artificial hormones oestrogen and progestogens. This is intended to ensure that ovulation is prevented. However, the pill can not only affect ovulation, but also the micronutrient balance. You should pay particular attention to the B vitamins when taking the contraceptive pill. A conscious diet rich in vitamin B is advisable with this contraceptive method.

3. The menopause (menopause)

The menopause refers to the very last menstrual period of a woman. This heralds the end of the fertile period. A phase of natural hormonal change and cessation of oestrogen production begins. A conscious look at your vitamin and mineral intake can also help during this turbulent time. Vitamin B6, for example, helps to regulate hormone activity and should therefore be sufficiently available for the body. Bone density also decreases as oestrogen levels fall. It is therefore particularly important to keep an eye on the supply of vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc, as they help to maintain normal bones. Isoflavones can also be real treasures in times of change. These are contained in soya, for example, and are similar in structure to the declining hormone oestrogen.

If you are aware of the hormonal phases of change, you can regain some balance through a careful supply of micronutrients. It also helps to be able to categorise the minor pitfalls of hormonal changes and deal with them more calmly. 😊
