The multivitamin base from 14 for every day
Jeden Tag capsules is a multivitamin developed for teenagers aged 14 and over (1 capsule daily) and adults (2 capsules daily), specially designed for those who prefer capsules to tablets.
This product, like the other multivitamins in the Jeden Tag range, is characterised by its specific composition and carefully selected ingredients and compounds of vitamins and minerals. This formula includes vitamin D3, K1 and K2 as well as the biologically active forms of B2, B6 and B12. In addition, a superior form of folic acid is used (5-MTHF with the brand name Quatrefolic®). The vitamin C is composed of a form of magnesium ascorbate without acidity and with easy absorption. The minerals are made up of compounds that are easily absorbed. The product is based on the latest scientific findings and is harmonised with current data on the nutritional status in Western Europe as well as the optimal amount to be consumed per nutrient.
B vitamins in the ideal form and quantity
The multivitamins for every day contain a large amount of B vitamins, but at an acceptable level. The daily requirement, average intake levels and their lower limits were analysed in detail. Not only are the latest scientific findings and the safe upper limits taken into account, but also the extent to which the body is able to metabolise the various B vitamins.
In addition, all formulas contain the biologically active forms of vitamins B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate-glucosamine salt). These are the forms utilised by the body and research shows that they have a higher bioavailability in the body.
Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate as a form of vitamin B6
Occasionally, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet can occur when very high amounts of vitamin B6 are taken. For this reason, in the Netherlands there is a maximum safe limit of 21 mg per day for adults when it comes to vitamin supplements, and the Every Day Multis are well below this level (maximum 4.2 mg). In addition, only the biologically active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P-5'-P), is used instead of pyridoxine HCl, which must first be metabolised in the body. It is currently being investigated whether the occasional side effects mentioned above only occur with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCl and do not occur, or occur to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Evidence suggests that only pyridoxine HCl is toxic to nerve cells in high doses.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
The synthetic form of folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is usually used in food supplements for reasons of stability, does not occur in nature. It is present in food as folate. Folic acid taken from food supplements must be converted in the body into tetrahydrofolate and then into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Research has shown that for a considerable number of people this complicated conversion process is far from optimal. Supplementation with 5-MTHF eliminates this problem.
Jeden Tag Multis utilise the superior form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate bound to glucosamine salt (known under the brand name Quatrefolic®). Thanks to this binding with vegetable glucosamine salt, the biologically active form can be kept stable and optimal absorption guaranteed. Studies prove the superior water solubility, stability and bioavailability of Quatrefolic®. 5-MTHF can also cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike the "normal" (synthetic) form of folic acid.
Vitamin B12 in the form of adenosyl- and methylcobalamin
The absorption of vitamin B12 from food is a complicated process. Evidence suggests that the NRV (formerly RDA) of 2.5 µg per day may be too low and that requirements may vary in healthy adults and older people and may exceed 20 µg per day. To ensure that an adequate intake of vitamin B12 is guaranteed and to take into account the safety of B12 supplements, Every Day Multivitamins contain higher doses of the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
Most other multivitamins and B12 products contain cyanocobalamin, an inexpensive, artificial form of vitamin B12 that does not occur naturally and must be converted by the body into its active forms. During this process, the cyanide is separated from the cobalamin (B12) and must then be broken down by the body. According to studies, the bioavailability of vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin is higher than that of cyanocobalamin.
Vitamin D in large quantities from plant sources
In recent years, European government institutions have recognised that the value for an adequate vitamin D intake from food (15 µg) should be set higher and that an increase in the maximum permissible dose (100 µg) is possible. In the Netherlands, caution still prevails: it is said that 10 µg would be sufficient and that the upper limit should be 75 µg. Strangely enough, the NRV (or RDA) is still 5 µg. However, the importance of higher doses has long been recognised in the orthomolecular world. It is recommended by leading experts in vitamin D that calcidiol levels in adults should be at least 75 nmol/litre. To maintain such a vitamin D level, an oral dose of vitamin D3 is estimated at 25-75 µg per day.
The Every Day Multis contain high amounts of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). This form is much more effective at increasing vitamin D levels than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). The new Jeden Tag Multis also contain plant-based vitamin D3 (vitamin D3V®). The reason for this is that it is made from algae and not from sheep's wool fat (like most vitamin D3 products). This means that all multis from the Jeden Tag range are now also suitable for vegans.
Vitamin K1 and K2
The Jeden Tag multivitamins now contain a small amount of vitamin K1 and a larger dose of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is primarily absorbed by the liver and is mainly responsible for activating coagulation factors. In contrast, vitamin K2 has a higher bioavailability, is widely distributed in the body tissue and therefore activates other vitamin K-dependent enzymes such as osteocalcin and MGP more effectively. Among other things, they ensure that the calcium is absorbed correctly and ends up in the right place, namely in the bones.
The body always utilises vitamin K first for the essential function of blood clotting. Vitamin K2 is a much more cost-intensive raw material than vitamin K1. Therefore, a small amount of K1 is added to the multis so that it can be used for the primary blood clotting function and the K2 for the other, also extremely important functions.
Incidentally, the regular NRV for vitamin K is based on the amount required for normal blood clotting. It is strange that the optimal vitamin K dosage for other body processes dependent on this vitamin has not been taken into consideration.
Stability of vitamin K2
It appears that vitamin K2 is a very sensitive substance. Especially together with magnesium and/or calcium, the content of this vitamin in a capsule or tablet decreases rapidly. It is a real challenge to use vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium. Therefore, Vitals utilises a K2 supplement branded K2VITAL™ DELTA, which is stable even in a formula containing many of these minerals. A patented microencapsulation process protects the fat-soluble K2 particles from reacting with other ingredients with two layers. An independent laboratory tested the stability of K2VITAL™ DELTA at Vitals' request, and it was found to perform the best. A comparison was made with other vitamin K2 brands, especially in combination with the ingredients of Vitals products. It was concluded that K2 protection is essential, that the K2 content of K2VITAL™ DELTA remained constant and that it was superior to other K2 ingredients.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
The Aquamin® brand of calcium and magnesium products, which are extracted from the sea, will now be used for the multis. The doses contained in the tablets are significantly higher compared to the previously used compound forms, and the absorption of these ingredients has been proven to be effective.
The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) comes from the seawater of the Irish Sea and studies show that it is well absorbed by the body. In addition to around 35% elemental magnesium, the raw material also contains small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
The calcium content (aquamin calcium) comes from the red algae Lithothamnium calcareum. This type of algae absorbs minerals and trace elements from the sea and stores them. It has a beautiful red-pink colour in nature, but when it dies it calcifies and turns white or light grey. Only calcified red algae from the waters along the Icelandic coast are harvested. In addition to 32% calcium, the raw material also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
Perhaps the synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium is one explanation for the better absorption and the remarkable studies that have been carried out with it.
Iron, zinc, copper and manganese in the form of amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
Bisglycinates are selected as amino acid chelates for the minerals iron, zinc, copper and manganese. Each magnesium particle is powerfully bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this compound form reach the small intestine effectively and are very well absorbed there. They are also gentle on the stomach, which can be particularly beneficial in the case of iron. Amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals are specifically selected by Vitals, recognisable by the TRAACS® brand, which stands for "The Real Amino Acid Chelate System". This brand is used to differentiate itself from other amino acid chelates that may be inferior or unstable. Albion holds over 100 patents worldwide that protect the process, science and structure of their amino acid chelate minerals.
Unique: relatively high dosage of choline
Choline has been used more or less as a standard ingredient in multivitamin supplements for quite some time, but almost always in low doses (between 10-30 mg) as not much was known about it. But that is increasingly changing! In 2012, the European Commission authorised three health claims for choline, which apply to a dose of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal fat metabolism, homocysteine metabolism and normal liver function. In 2016, an RDA of 550 mg/day was set for the first time in America, based on clinical research, specifically to determine the daily requirement. In 2016, the EFSA also decided that choline is an essential nutrient, but has not yet set an NRV. The adequate intake was set at 400 mg/day, based on the average intake in European countries and not on the American study, which found 550 mg/day. The average intake by adults in Europe varies between 291 and 468 mg/day, reason enough to include a generous amount of choline in a daily multivitamin!
We use VitaCholine® brand choline in our Every Day Multis. This brand stands for the highest quality and a lot of research has been done with it.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids. In the body, a high concentration of these substances is found in the retina (retina) and the macula lutea ("yellow spot"). The body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself, but must obtain them from food. They are found in green leafy vegetables and in red, yellow and orange-coloured fruit and vegetables, among other things. Meso-zeaxanthin is only found in very small amounts in food (shrimps, salmon skin, trout skin and meat). It is mainly formed in the retina by converting lutein through an enzymatic reaction. However, it can be taken in the form of supplements. Meso-zeaxanthin has relatively recently been recognised as a very good supplement and is preferable to supplementing lutein and zeaxanthin alone.
