Mesoporosil: innovative silicon in capsule form with high absorption
Food supplements containing silicon are in great demand. Research is also increasingly focussing on this fascinating trace element and its numerous possible applications. Food supplements with solid silicon (such as capsules or tablets) have often shown insufficient absorbability. Unfortunately, until now we have had to rely on liquid (and not always tasty) silicon preparations to obtain easily absorbable silicon.
Thanks to the high-quality research work of the manufacturer Eytelia, this has now changed. Vitals' Silicium-MP contains MESOPOROSIL®, a novel and unique form of silicon that is easily absorbed in solid form. Due to its ideal absorbability, a small daily dose of 6-12 mg of silicon (one to two capsules) is sufficient. Really practical. In addition, capsules (and tablets) have the advantage over liquid silicon preparations that they have a longer shelf life and do not require preservatives. Find out more about the benefits of Silicium-MP below!
Silicon: an important and multifaceted trace element
Silicon is the second most common element on the earth's surface. The name "silicon" comes from the Latin word "silex", which means flint or pebble. Silicon has a high affinity for oxygen, which is why it does not occur in nature in its pure form, but only bound to oxygen atoms, such as silicon dioxide (also known as silica).
Rock silica can be dissolved in water, which leads to the formation of orthosilicic acid (OSA). Plants absorb OSA from the groundwater and deposit it on so-called phytoliths. These are silicon dioxide deposits that are distributed throughout the plant and contribute to strength, among other things. Silicon is also present in the human body; it is one of the most common trace elements after iron and zinc. Not everything is yet known about the importance of silicon for humans. However, there are a growing number of scientific publications on silicon and our knowledge of it is increasing.
Silicon from the diet: predominantly of plant origin
The content of silicon is particularly high in plant foods such as wholemeal products, legumes and dates. Horsetail, nettle and bamboo are also rich sources of silicon. As a rule, these are not consumed, but often form the basis for dietary supplements. Water and (non-alcoholic) beer also contain silicon, although the content varies considerably.
Plant silicon is often not well absorbed. Orthosilicic acid (OSA) is the naturally occurring, dissolved form of silicon that is most effectively absorbed by plants and humans. However, plant sources of silicon contain silicon dioxide, which is poorly soluble and can therefore only be absorbed to a limited extent. This is in the form of phytoliths, not OSA, which is easily absorbed. As a result, the intake of silicon from plant sources such as wholemeal products and bananas and from supplements containing nettle and bamboo can be low.
Liquids such as (non-alcoholic) beer and water, which contain dissolved silicon in the form of OSA, are the best sources of easily absorbable silicon. The form and processing of the silicon determine the absorbability of supplements, and only a handful of silicon supplements are easily absorbable. One example of this is monomethylsilanetriol (MMST). MMST is called "organic" silicon because the silicon is bound to a carbon atom. In chemistry, compounds that contain a carbon atom are called organic compounds. As the name may suggest, the term "organic" has nothing to do with biological or plant aspects or with how natural this silicon compound is. Silicon combined with carbon does not exist in nature. MMST is an artificially produced silicon compound that can only be easily absorbed in liquid form.
Choline-stabilised orthosilicic acid
ch-OSA is another common variant of silicon, especially in liquid supplements. OSA, a silicon contained in liquid food supplements, is very sticky in high concentrations. This makes correct absorption impossible. To prevent the molecules from sticking together, the silicon compound used must be stabilised. To ensure stability and absorbability, choline was added to the silicon compound. ch-OSA should be taken in liquid form for good absorption.
MMST and ch-OSA are liquid food supplements, but many people do not find them particularly pleasant to take. They are not very convenient to take. The flavour is not always pleasant. In addition, liquids generally have a short shelf life after opening. Preservatives are therefore often required.
The manufacturer Eytelia offers MESOPOROSIL®, a new form of silicon that is characterised by both optimal absorbability and suitability for processing into capsules and tablets. Thanks to the special patented technology, the silicon dissolves very well in the digestive juices and forms optimally absorbable OSA. This technology also ensures that the dissolved OSA does not stick together in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore remains highly absorbable. The optimal, absorbable silicon in capsule or tablet form is still unique in the field of silicon food supplements!
Authorised cosmetic claims: Silicon helps to keep the skin firm, smooth and elastic. Silicon promotes skin hydration. Silicon contributes to the strength of nails and the density of hair.
