An optimal blend of 800 mg vitamin C and 60 mg magnesium
Obtained from the easily absorbable magnesium ascorbate. For people who do not tolerate ascorbic acid well, vitamin C in the buffered form of magnesium ascorbate is suitable. Magnesium ascorbate has a lower acid content compared to ascorbic acid. It therefore causes virtually no problems in the gastrointestinal tract. If there is a higher requirement for vitamin C, a form without added acid, such as magnesium ascorbate, is best suited. Another advantage of Vitals Vitamin C + Magnesium is the content of 60 mg magnesium per capsule, which can be useful if additional magnesium supplementation is necessary. One vegetarian capsule contains vitamin C and magnesium from magnesium ascorbate. Magnesium ascorbate (vitamin C) is also available as a powder.
Effect of vitamin C
Vitamin C is probably the most frequently mentioned vitamin, which is particularly known for its positive influence on the body's defences. And this is true, especially during intense physical activity or in cold environments, vitamin C has a supportive effect on the immune system. However, this vitamin plays a role in a variety of processes. Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant and has an important function as a free radical scavenger. It is part of a complex system that includes the body's own antioxidants, dietary antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes and in which there are mutual dependencies and interactions. In this function, it protects DNA, proteins and fats from oxidative damage and thus helps to maintain healthy cells and tissues. Vitamin C is also necessary as a coenzyme for three different enzymes that are involved in the production of collagen (the most common building material in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels, among other things.
Vitamin C is a necessary cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. Both act as neurotransmitters and hormones in the body, which is why vitamin C has a positive influence on the function of the nervous system and contributes to normal mental function. For the synthesis of carnitine, which is required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production, vitamin C is indispensable for two enzymes.
Vitamin C thus contributes to the energy-maintaining function. It can also help with fatigue. In addition, there are many people who do not get enough iron in their diet - especially women of childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. The dietary absorption of iron is improved by vitamin C. This is non-haeme iron, which is found in both plant and animal foods. The absorption of haeme iron, which is found exclusively in animal products, is not affected by vitamin C. Around 90% of the iron found in food is non-haeme iron.
Humans cannot produce vitamin C on their own and are completely dependent on food intake for their supply of this vitamin.
Effect of magnesium in the organism
Magnesium is beneficial for the muscles and plays an important role in maintaining strong teeth and bones. It is also involved in over 300 enzymatic processes. Magnesium plays an important role as a cofactor for enzymes involved in protein synthesis (the process in which protein is produced on the basis of DNA). And it helps to maintain a good balance of electrolytes, as it is a cofactor for many enzymes that are responsible for maintaining an electrical potential across the cell membrane (cells - especially nerve and muscle cells - use the electrical charge of electrolytes to conduct electrical impulses to and from other cells, such as nerve impulses or muscle contractions). Magnesium plays a role in nerve conduction and muscle contraction, making it important for muscle function, including that of the heart muscle.
In addition, a lack of magnesium intake can cause fatigue. In this case, magnesium can help you get back into shape. It contributes to the release of energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins and thus supports energy levels. It is also important for brain and nerve functions, which affect aspects such as concentration, memory and mood. It also contributes to the formation of cells and tissue and to normal cell division.
