Calcium ascorbate is a buffered form of vitamin C powder that is suitable for people who have difficulties with ascorbic acid. Calcium ascorbate is less acidic than ascorbic acid, which means that it causes virtually no gastrointestinal problems. To increase your vitamin C intake, it makes sense to use a non-acidic variant such as calcium ascorbate. An additional benefit of this product is the calcium content of 210 mg per measuring spoon - this can be useful if calcium supplementation is also necessary. Vitamin C powder is also suitable for adults and children who have problems swallowing tablets. The amount of powder can be adjusted to individual requirements using the measuring spoon provided.

Effect of vitamin C

Vitamin C is probably the most frequently mentioned vitamin, known above all for its positive influence on the body's defences. And that is true. Especially during intensive physical activity or in cold environments, vitamin C has a supportive effect on the immune system. However, this vitamin is also involved in a variety of processes.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant and has an important function as a free radical scavenger. It is part of a complex system that includes the body's own antioxidants, dietary antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes and in which there are mutual dependencies and interactions. In this function, it protects DNA, proteins and fats from oxidative damage and thus helps to maintain healthy cells and tissues. Vitamin C is also necessary as a coenzyme for three different enzymes that are involved in the production of collagen (the most common building material in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels, among other things.

Vitamin C is a necessary cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. Both act as neurotransmitters and hormones in the body, which is why vitamin C has a positive influence on the function of the nervous system and contributes to normal mental function. For the synthesis of carnitine, which is required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production, vitamin C is indispensable for two enzymes.

Vitamin C thus contributes to the energy-maintaining function.

It can also help with fatigue. In addition, there are many people who do not get enough iron in their diet - especially women of childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. The absorption of iron is improved by vitamin C. This is non-haeme iron, which is found in both plant and animal foods. Vitamin C has no effect on the absorption of haeme iron, which is only found in animal products. Around 90% of the iron found in food is non-haeme iron. Only 10 % is made up of haeme iron. As an electron donor, vitamin C can convert oxidised vitamin E back into its active, reduced form and thus preserve its effect. humans cannot produce vitamin C on their own and are completely dependent on food intake for their supply of this vitamin.

Ingredients

Calcium ascorbate.

Recommended intake

Take ½-1 level measuring spoon (1.1 - 2.3 grams) per day with a meal. Mix with (approx. 150 ml) water or another liquid. One measuring spoon of 2.5 ml (= approx. 2.3 grams) is included.

Note

Kidney patients should not take more than 200 mg of vitamin C per day, partly because of the risk of hyperoxalaemia (too high a concentration of oxalic acid in the blood).

Storage instructions

Store in a cool, dry place away from light (not in the refrigerator). Limited shelf life after opening.
