Vegan and still as good as fish oil - or better!
Algae oil is a plant-based, low-pollutant and vegan source of the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. EPA/DHA are essential for human life. Sufficient amounts of EPA/DHA are found almost exclusively in fatty cold-water fish and algae. Algae oil is a health-promoting food supplement that is obtained from microalgae such as Schizochytrium or Ulkenia and is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, in particular eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids are essential for the human body as they play an important role in various physiological processes and functions. In contrast to fish, algae oil is a vegan alternative that is particularly suitable for people who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet or do not want to consume fish for ethical reasons..... Read more

The health-promoting effects of algae oil
These are the subject of current research. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids may have an influence on blood clotting and blood thinning, which helps to prevent thrombosis. They also show positive effects on cognitive performance and concentration, while the anti-inflammatory properties are particularly beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Clinical studies have shown that subjects who consumed algae oil experienced less pain and swelling in their joints.
The consumption of algae oil is particularly recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the healthy development of the foetus, especially for the brain and vision. However, algae oil should not be heated and is better suited for dressings or marinades.
Algae oil is available in organic supermarkets and health food shops in various forms, often in combination with other ingredients. Due to possible additives and the varying concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in the products, it is advisable to check the list of ingredients carefully. Algae oil should also be stored in a cool place away from light.
Caution is advised with regard to consumption, as excessive intake of omega-3 fatty acids can also have side effects, particularly in people with impaired glucose metabolism or thyroid disorders. The European Food Safety Authority recommends a safe intake of up to five grams of EPA and DHA per day. In addition, the question of the sustainability of algae oil must be considered, as it can theoretically help to conserve fish stocks, but farming and processing currently also requires high resources.
